Set in 35 acres in Edgware, North London Collegiate School is an academic and co-curricular powerhouse that wears its success lightly. Founded in 1850 by Frances Mary Buss and now led by Headmistress Vicky Bingham, it is a day school for girls 4 to 18, known for producing bright grounded young women who relish being busy.

Academically, NLCS sits in the top tier. The Sunday Times Parent Power Guide 2026 names it Independent Secondary School of the Year, Independent IB School of the Year and Independent Secondary School of the Year in London, with rankings that place it first among girls schools nationally and third overall. Recent cohorts see most grades at the top level and many leavers heading to Oxbridge, Ivy League and other leading universities, though the tone is more thoughtful than triumphalist.

This is not a joyless exam factory. The school is known for a culture of academic talk as well as writing, where students are expected to argue, question and present, not just memorise. Lessons are pacy, expectations high, and thinking hard is something to be enjoyed rather than endured.

Life beyond the classroom is fast paced and purposeful. Tatler has admired the strong co-curricular programme and the now well-known Bingham’s Bites lunches, where small groups of girls join the Head for informal conversation. Music, drama, debating, VEX Robotics, sport and a shifting list of clubs all jostle for space, and the striking Ideas Hub hosts everything from philosophy conferences to Surge, the school’s start up academy for sixth formers.

The Good Schools Guide describes NLCS as a “top drawer school for super bright, confident and resilient girls,” which feels about right. Parents say they feel “in safe hands” and talk warmly about teachers whose influence lasts long after the last exam. Corridors are busy rather than pressured, helped by thoughtful pastoral care and a student body that is diverse and notably unfussy about status. Means tested bursaries and links with an international family of NLCS schools broaden the mix further.

Who will thrive here? A girl who enjoys real academic stretch, works hard without making a fuss, and is keen to throw herself into plays, fixtures, trips and new ventures. It is a golden ticket of a place, but one that genuinely expects its young North Londoners to use that privilege well.
